Titles in MTWGG
Titles in MTWGG are intended to be a fun community activity with some underlying reasoning and purpose.
Firstly it's recognition of you and your perceived status in MTWGG.
Secondly, it allows us to create a personal tailored on-line medieval profile of your gaming interests and activities, so others know if have similar interests.
Thirdly, as MTWGG is run as a quasi-Medieval Kingdom, to give a feel and some general historical interest/context to what we do; it's a great way to encourage role playing, collection of traits and other fun group related activities that help to keep the MTWGG community active.
Fouth, it's nice to get recognition for your contributions to the site that's here for you to enjoy.
Ranks, titles and privaleges have no real bearing on your gaming experience. Everyone is entitled to do whatever they want without limitations, although we do offer some unique benefits if you are lucky enough to win a special reward. So, for example, access to a Holy Order or an exclusive Jousting Club might be limited by certain criteria and you can't join every community faction, since we wish to encourage different groups and rival factions to exist, just as they do in a real world.
Enoblement, rank and reward - Guidelines
First of all, it's important to understand that MTWGG is run as a 'meritocracy' which is to say that the more you contribute to the group, the more your contribution is rewarded. It's our way of encouraging dedicated players and active participation.
Anyone who owns Medieval II: Total War and Medieval Total War can join. The community is dedicated to supporting these games and Medieval interest generally.
Rank and Merit awards
There are now four classes of awards:
1. Title Awards
These are generally to do with taking responsibilities for managing group activities and reflect the status of leadership roles.
2. Achievement Awards
Achievement Awards are those that are gained by doing certain activities and generally reflect gaming style and activity of the members. They are also a good guide to player experience.
3. Unique Awards
These are special awards, such as those achieved in taking part in a theme, campaign or competition; these awards cannot be won in normal game play, therefore they are unique (it doesn't mean one of a kind).
4. Heroic Awards
These awards are given for outstanding performance achievements, chivalry and valour. They are highly prized high status rewards, that will be noted whereever you go with envy and admiration.
Enoblements works in a very structured way.
Any new joiner is entitled to be a 'Squire' that is the automatically awarded MTWGG default award.
If you compete in a Sanctioned Tourney you can earn the award of a Knighthood. You are then entitled call yourself "Sir...[Winalot]"
Your default title will immediately upgrade to 'English Knight'
You can ask to have your nationality changed to suit your preferred Faction theme. So for example, if you want to be a Milanese Knight, so be it. You should speak to the 'Master of the Rolls' (the MTWGG Keeper of the record of Enoblements and Titles) to get this changed. You can check your record at any time and updates will be posted periodically.
There are several ways to win a promotion from Knight to the nobility.
Winning a Tourney entitles a Knight (by Royal decree) to earn the title Baronet (a Hereditary Knight).
Knights and Baronets are automatically raised to Barons when they become a site Moderator (we encourage players to get actively involved in organising games and participating in activities) so this a merit reward.
Those Barons who become Officers of the Gaming Group, are elevated to the rank of Earl, so again this is a rank based title reward.
This reward structure enables members to immediate identify who is is what importance within the group without prejudicing them in any way. Those with the higher rank will generally be the more active and responsible and involved members of the group from a game organisation perpective, but like all nobles, these titles are not a reflection of military prowess and must be read on conjunction with a number of other traits and awards.
At the top of the Medieval II tree, you have the site founder and his inner circle of advisors (the Privvy Council), the most trusted and senior members of the nobility. These posts are granted to those who have the eye or the ear of the Prince or his favour, which is granted upon the merits of contribution.
The group is run by a constitutional monarchy (in the medieval sense), where the Prince passes certain powers to his council to dispense the kings will and policy. In return for which he agrees not to interfere in their management of the realm so long as they uphold the law and rule in his name according to democratic principles. The guiding rule being not to exclude anyone from any activity they wish to participate in, except where such person breaches the rules on etiquette (rudeness, excessive swearing, abuse of other players). The Privvy Council pass judgement and rule on all matters so that, for example, the Prince can waste his time writing this stuff, for example!
Titles are granted by the Prince to his Counsel and Royal Officers by royal ascent. That is to say that all offices are held from the crown.
The Privvy Council are entitled to raise up member of the realm to the Privvy Council and to seek Royal Ascent to any promotions, rules, administrative decisions, etc that they care to make. In reality they hold a great deal of power and can decide upon the content, use and resource allocation of the Gaming Group. The Prince has taken a position that he will only intercede as arbiter where a dispute arises or a majority decision cannot be reached, or in times of expediency should the Privvy Council be prevented from conducting itself.
As in all things, the power and influence of the few wax and wane and some have been known to fall from grace (usually self-inflicted) leaving opportunities for new and enthusiastic young noblemen. By and large however, they are a band of 'merry men' who make good, are friendly and positive about the activities of the group and it is their dedication and motivation that brings them to the fore, rather than any particular age or experience.
Achievement Awards:
These rewards are discretionary but may also be given by recommendation of the Privvy council (Officers) or to the Privvy Council (Moderators) for outstanding service and contribution. They are therefore always on the look out for talent and achievement that enhances the Gaming Group experience and to reward it accordingly.
Tourney Awards
These are structured awards based upon feats of arms in competitivel OLBs.
The winner is crowned 'Champion' and all participants win a unique title of Knight of...[Tourney] in recognition of their participation.
Unique titles and rewards are also now being introduced to encourage competitive play.
All members MTWGG are eligible and these awards will be collectibles in terms of 'Sanctioned Titles' that members are entitled to use and display on their site profiles and Steam pages or and in their MTWGG correspondence.
All such titles will be listed in a 'Roll of Enoblement' to be maintained and recorded for prosperity by the 'Master of the Rolls'.
Unique Awards
These are prestigious awards granted by a specific MTWGG event or activity award; for example, the most senior Knight in a Jousting Group is entitled to be called 'Jousting Master'. Only one can exist in each Jousting Group and he holds the title by right of arms.
Heroic Awards
Look out for these, they are worth a gasp and a gossip. We all love a bit of Celeb spotting, don't we?
I hope you will all join me in the fun and by joining in our Meritocracy in contributing to MTWGG as an active gaming group with lots of fun activities.
Have fun.
